Every year, more than a million wildebeest, together with zebras and gazelles, move in a great circle through Tanzania’s Serengeti and Kenya’s Masai Mara in search of fresh grass. We plan your private safari around where the herds are likely to be.
Where are the herds? The wildebeest follow the rains in a year-round loop between the Serengeti and the Masai Mara. Each season offers something different – from newborn calves in the south to dramatic river crossings in the north.
A typical year. The numbers match the seasons on the right.
Calving season. The herds graze the short-grass plains and give birth to their calves, which draws lions, cheetahs and hyenas.
The long rains turn the plains green as the herds begin to move north and west – a quieter, greener time to visit.
The herds gather to cross the Grumeti River, home to some of the largest crocodiles in Africa.
The famous Mara River crossings, when thousands of animals plunge into the river – the highlight for many travellers.
With the short rains, the herds stream back south through the eastern Serengeti towards the calving grounds.
Good to know: the Migration is a natural event and its timing changes from year to year with the rains, so use this calendar as a guide. Tell us your dates and we’ll suggest the best area.
Every safari is private, so you can wait at a river crossing as long as you like.
We match your route to where the herds are likely to be when you travel.
See the Masai Mara, the Serengeti, or combine both sides in one journey.
The herds draw lions, cheetahs, leopards and crocodiles – wildlife drama at its best.
From fly-in trips to a camp close to the herds, to longer journeys through both the Masai Mara and the Serengeti. Tell us when you want to travel and we’ll match the safari to the season.
