Safari planning
A month-by-month guide to Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda & Rwanda
East Africa is a year-round safari destination, and every season has its own highlights. Pick a month below for the weather, wildlife highlights, packing tips and where to go.
Hot, sunny and still green after the short rains, January is one of the best months of the year for a safari, and a great time to combine the bush with the beach.
Warm, sunny days and mostly dry, with the odd short shower.
The wildebeest herds gather on the short-grass plains of the southern Serengeti, ready for the calving season.
Light, breathable clothing in neutral colours, a wide-brim hat and high-SPF sunscreen.
Calving season. Thousands of wildebeest calves are born every day on the southern Serengeti plains, and the predators are never far away.
Hot and mostly dry, with clear skies and great light for photography.
Newborn wildebeest and zebra, with lions, cheetahs and hyenas following the herds.
Binoculars, a camera with a good zoom lens and a refillable water bottle.
The long rains usually arrive in the second half of March. Early in the month is still excellent, with fewer visitors and better rates.
Warm and more humid, with afternoon showers becoming more frequent later in the month.
The herds are still in the southern Serengeti, and migratory birds make it a superb month for birding.
A light rain jacket and quick-drying clothes.
The heart of the green season: lush landscapes, very few vehicles and the best value of the year. Some camps close for a few weeks, so plan ahead.
The wettest month, with heavy afternoon and evening downpours. Mornings are often clear.
Young animals everywhere, dramatic skies and excellent birdlife. The resident wildlife stays put.
A waterproof jacket, sturdy closed shoes and insect repellent.
The rains ease towards the end of May and the migration starts to move north. Green-season rates make it a great-value month.
Showers become lighter and less frequent, with fresh, cool mornings.
Long columns of wildebeest move through the central and western Serengeti, and the rutting season begins.
Layers for cool mornings, plus a light rain jacket.
The dry season begins. The bush thins out, animals gather near water and game viewing gets better every week. It’s also the start of the best gorilla trekking months.
Dry and sunny, with cool mornings and evenings.
The migration reaches the western Serengeti and the Grumeti River, with its first crocodile-filled crossings.
A warm fleece or jacket for early-morning game drives.
Peak safari season. The herds usually start arriving in the Masai Mara during July (exact timing changes each year), so book well in advance.
Dry, clear and pleasantly cool, which makes it very comfortable for game drives.
The first Mara River crossings, plenty of big cats and excellent gorilla trekking.
Warm layers and a dust-proof bag for your camera.
Prime time for the Great Migration in the Masai Mara and northern Serengeti, and the most popular month of the year.
Dry and mild, with sunny days and chilly early mornings.
Dramatic Mara River crossings, big herds and lots of predator action.
Binoculars for everyone in the group, plus a warm layer.
Excellent game viewing continues. The herds are usually still in the Masai Mara and northern Serengeti, and the crowds start to thin.
Dry and getting warmer, with clear skies.
River crossings, big cats and short grass, which makes animals easy to spot.
Neutral-coloured clothing (avoid bright white and dark blue) and sunglasses.
The last weeks of the dry season. Animals concentrate around rivers and waterholes, and later in the month you’ll find better value.
Hot and dry. The short rains can start towards the end of the month.
Huge elephant herds at Tarangire and Amboseli. The migration starts heading south late in the month.
Sun protection and light layers, plus a scarf against the dust.
The short rains bring the green back to the plains. It’s quieter in the parks, rates are lower and the light is beautiful.
Short afternoon showers, usually with sunny mornings.
The herds move south through the Serengeti, and migratory birds arrive from Europe and Asia.
A light rain jacket and a small dry bag for your electronics.
The rains ease in December and the festive season is very popular for family safaris, so book early for Christmas and New Year.
Warm and green, with occasional showers early in the month.
The herds return to the southern Serengeti plains, with lush scenery and lots of young animals.
Light layers, a rain jacket and swimwear for a beach extension.

Message from the Owner
My journey into tourism began with a genuine passion for Africa’s wildlife, breathtaking landscapes, and the joy of sharing these incredible experiences with travelers from around the world. As a professional tour guide, I had the privilege of leading guests through Kenya’s iconic national parks and hidden gems, helping them discover the beauty of nature while creating unforgettable memories.
Those years as a guide taught me that a safari is more than just spotting wildlife—it is about connecting people with nature, experiencing different cultures, and creating moments that last a lifetime. Every guest had a unique dream, and I found great satisfaction in turning those dreams into reality through exceptional service, local knowledge, and personalized care.
Inspired by these experiences, I founded Daydream Safaris with a vision to provide authentic, tailor-made safari adventures across Kenya and Tanzania. My goal was to create a company that combines expert local knowledge, outstanding customer service, and carefully planned itineraries to deliver unforgettable travel experiences.
Today, Daydream Safaris is committed to helping travelers explore the wonders of East Africa with confidence and comfort. Whether it is witnessing the Great Migration, tracking the Big Five, climbing majestic mountains, or relaxing on pristine beaches, every journey is designed with passion, professionalism, and attention to detail.
